The Hottest Chili Pepper in the World

Posted by: Samuel Phineas Upham

Smithsonian recently highlighted the Naga King Chili, which is considered the hottest chili pepper in the world according to some ranking scales. Just how hot is the Naga King Chili? In 1922, anthropologist J.H. Hutton wrote that the chilies were used by women of the Chang village of India to remove the flesh from the heads of victims of conflicts with their tribe.

In the Scoville heat index used to rank the spiciness of chili peppers, the Naga King is anywhere from 500,000 to 1.5 million; by contrast, the standard jalapeno is at about 4,000 on the same scale. But this massive amount of heat doesn’t stop contestants from competing in a Naga King eating contest each year at the Hornbill Festival in northern India, sometimes eating five or more chilies in one sitting.
